Save Money While Generating Less Garbage
Americans are burying themselves in trash, producing 4.5 pounds of waste per person per day, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. We don't "reuse and reduce" enough Packaging of food and other products is one of the main sources of waste paper and plastics. EarthWorks Groups reports that about one-third of all the waste Americans send to landfills is packaging. Much packaging is purposely excessive and elaborate, serving only to make a product look better but contributing nothing to the value of the item. While recycling is one answer to this problem, the goal is to increase the practice of reuse and reduce; that is, prevent as much as possible the amount of material that is thrown away or recycled. An increased focus on reuse and reduce habits is critically needed along with more participation in recycling, which currently has disappointing compliance: in 2009 Americans recovered about 61 million tons of municipal solid waste through recycling, while composting recovered about 21 million tons of waste. About 29 million tons were combusted for energy recovery, or about 12 percent of the total amount of municipal solid waste. A reuse and reduce approach saves natural resources, reduces energy use and emission of greenhouse gases, cuts down on transportation costs and pollution, and results in less materials dumped in landfills. Reuse and reduce practices also save money for consumers, schools, businesses, and communities. Every day, you can make choices to reuse products and resources and reduce by hundreds of pounds the amount of materials that you personally contribute to landfills. The time to reuse, reduce, and save money is now.
