Pick a Shopping Portal that Donates a Portion of Purchases to Charity

by Michael Organ
The Challenge

Via charity shopping portals, many of the Internet's best-known stores are willing to donate a portion of their sales to charity.

This is a win-win-win situation:

  • You win, because a portion of your Internet purchases can be donated to the charity of your choice, at no extra cost to you.
  • Your charity wins, because it gets a great new source of donations.
  • Participating Internet stores win, because they use the charity donation feature as a way to attract new customers and to encourage greater loyalty from existing customers.

Generally, lesser-known Internet stores are willing to donate a higher portion of their sales (up to 15%) than the portion of sales (up to 5%) donated by better-known Internet stores. However, there are exceptions. For instance, Amazon.com is willing to donate up to 30% of its sales revenues for higher margin or promotional items.

Here's the small catch: In order for a portion of your purchases to be donated to charity, you cannot surf directly to the Internet store. Instead, you must click through a charity shopping portal. Fortunately, this takes only a few seconds, once an account is set up.

How to Make a Difference

Invest a few minutes to set up an account at a charity shopping portal and to choose the charity that will receive a portion of each purchase you make when clicking through that shopping portal. Leading charity portals include iGive.com, GoodShop, Give Back America, and We-care.com.
